Volatility and drawdown measure different kinds of movement

Read variability, losses from prior peaks and the limits of a short historical window.

Historical volatility describes dispersion in past returns over a chosen window. Drawdown describes a fall from a prior peak within the observed path. A series can have considerable day-to-day variation without its largest peak-to-trough decline matching another series. Research should show both measurements and the observation period rather than presenting a single label as a complete risk assessment.

Specify whether returns are simple percentage returns or logarithmic returns, how missing observations are treated and which timestamps define a day. The standard deviation of daily returns is still a daily statistic unless an annualisation convention is applied. Annualisation depends on assumptions and a frequency factor; a twenty-four-hour crypto series needs an explicitly stated convention.

Our suggested comparison begins with identical dates and sampling intervals. Plot the underlying path beside the summary statistics so an isolated event, a gap or a regime change remains visible. A short window can understate events outside it. If the dataset lacks sufficient history, say so rather than assigning a confident low-risk description from a few calm observations.

Historical measurements do not determine the next return, and low measured variation does not establish safety. Derivatives introduce additional contract and leverage considerations, which the CFTC explains in its futures education. Use the dashboard to ask how sensitive your interpretation is to the chosen window, whether an extreme observation dominates the result and which relevant risks the price series cannot measure.

Questions to investigate

  1. Does the volatility label state its sampling interval and annualisation convention?
  2. What happens when the window includes an earlier stress period?
  3. Which risks are absent from a price-only calculation?
