How to research an Indian startup beyond its funding headline

Distinguish an announced round from verified business progress, customer evidence and the terms behind a valuation.

A funding headline raises several separate questions: who announced it, what transaction is described and which parts are independently supported? Keep an announcement, a signed agreement and a completed transfer distinct. Quote the source’s wording when establishing the milestone and avoid treating a promotional statement as an audited account of the business.

Organise a research dossier around product availability, customer evidence, repeat use and the economics of serving those customers. Record the date and definition of every metric. Registered users, monthly active customers and paying accounts answer different questions. Ask for the measurement window and whether the number describes a company claim or an independently checked observation.

A valuation alone does not describe revenue quality, dilution or cash runway. Create an evidence table that separates available records from unanswered questions; do not fill missing figures with estimates presented as facts. For a founder interview, request permission to quote the response and use submitted images. Clearly identify paid placements and relevant commercial relationships.

India’s official Startup India site provides recognition and ecosystem resources; recognition should not be presented as proof of investment returns or commercial success. Use official company and regulatory records where available and verify the exact legal entity. A useful story should explain the business, its Indian relevance and the evidence still needed, rather than repeat a funding announcement.

Questions to investigate

  1. Which milestone is actually supported: announcement, agreement or completion?
  2. How are customers, revenue and repeat use defined and dated?
  3. Which important claim still lacks an independent source?
