India inflation explained: CPI, your household and business costs

Read the official CPI release without confusing slower inflation, falling prices and your own cost basket.

India’s Consumer Price Index describes changes in retail prices for a defined consumption basket. Begin with the official MoSPI release and note the reference month, population coverage and index definition. Keep rural, urban and combined measures distinct. Use the release’s stated base and method rather than assuming an older series is directly comparable after a revision.

Separate the price level from the inflation rate. A lower year-on-year growth rate can coexist with a higher price level. Before describing something as cheaper, identify the actual comparison: the previous month, the same month last year or a chosen historical date. Keep those periods consistent across charts, headlines and prediction rules.

Your household budget and a company’s operating expenses are different baskets. A family researching food and rent should list its own major costs; a founder may care more about wages, imported components, interest and logistics. Use a clearly labelled illustrative worksheet to compare exposures. Do not present a private example as an official inflation estimate or infer that every Indian faces the same change.

For a useful update, state what changed in the official measure, which components explain it and what remains uncertain. Link the release and retain its observation date. A later correction should be visible. If making a forecast, define the exact series and first-release comparison in advance; do not choose the measure after seeing the result.

Questions to investigate

  1. Which CPI series and reference month support the headline?
  2. Does the claim describe a level, a monthly change or an annual change?
  3. Which costs in your own basket differ from the published measure?
